Olympic Games: Martin Fourcade and Frida Hansdotter elected to the IOC Athletes’ Commission

Former French biathlete Martin Fourcade and former Swedish skier Frida Hansdotter have been elected to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission, the IOC announced Thursday in Beijing on the sidelines of the 2022 Olympic Games.

Among the 16 candidates in the running, Fourcade received the most votes with 971 votes out of the 2,307 cast from January 27 to February 17 by participants in the 2022 Olympics. Hansdotter will occupy the second seat in this commission which was open to election, having received 694 votes.

Fourcade, 33, and Hansdotter, 36, are joining this commission for eight years, whose mission is “to represent the athletes and support them, on and off the competition area”. Fourcade ended his career in March 2020 with one of the finest records in the history of his sport.

He has won five Olympic titles, 13 world titles, the overall World Cup standings seven times in a row and a total of 83 individual World Cup successes. Fourcade was already chairman of the Paris-2024 Athletes’ Commission, the organizing committee for the 2024 Olympics.

Hansdotter, who hung up her skis in 2019, was notably Olympic slalom champion in 2018 and won four medals at the Alpine Ski Worlds, including silver in 2015 in Beaver Creek (United States).
