Omicron: what is this new symptom that affects patients at night?

A new variant in full expansion across the world, Omicron would have a new effect on infected people, which researchers have just discovered. This one happens at night.

More infectious but causing fewer serious cases, the Omicron variant has surprised scientists and doctors who analyze it and seek to understand it. In South Africa, Dr Unben Pillay took advantage of a conference organized by the Ministry of Health to reveal that infected people were affected by a new symptom: night sweats.

“We have seen a sharp increase in cases over the past ten days,” he said, reports Midi Libre. He said that the effects noted so far have mostly resembled those of a flu, with dry cough, fever or body aches. Night sweats were already there, but very mild, like the other symptoms.

Very unpleasant, night sweats are times when a person sweats profusely while sleeping. This phenomenon prompts her to wake up, with wet clothes and sheets.

While the Delta variant can also cause night sweats, this symptom is much less common than with Omicron. It is mainly characterized by a itchy throat, severe fatigue, muscle pain resembling stiffness or rashes, especially in children.

Delta, which is the majority variant in France and in many countries, is gradually giving way to Omicron. The Minister of Health Olivier Véran predicted that the latter would prevail in early January.
