On February 27th – election in Lienz: 33 municipalities and many lists

The Lienz district – or in other words East Tyrol – has just over 2000 square kilometers and just under 50,000 inhabitants. There is room for 33 municipalities, in which the municipal councils and mayors will be elected on February 27th. One specific feature: There are innumerable lists of names and many “things in common”.

From A as in “Together for Ainet” to V as in “Community list Virgen” or from “Together for Gaimberg” to “Community list Kartitsch” – the Mayors of East Tyrol have mostly belonged to a list of names not only since the 2016 election. In most cases you could assign them to the ÖVP, but you shouldn’t see the whole thing in such a black light – especially not in the capital Lienz. There Elisabeth Blanik achieved a brilliant election victory six years ago with her SPÖ and 42.8 percent. That also meant ten seats on the Liebburg municipal council. The second strongest party was and is the Lienz People’s Party, for which Alexander Kröll will stand this time and challenge Blanik. The red city boss presented her team two weeks ago and announced a mega party. “If we keep the ten mandates, we will celebrate until morning.” 33 East Tyrolean municipalitiesThe municipal council and mayoral elections in the 33 East Tyrolean municipalities are characterized by a special aspect of Tyrolean electoral law: There is no no. This means: If there is only one candidate for mayor, 100 percent of the valid votes are automatically assigned to him. So Josef Mair became the mayor of Dölsach and Josef Mair the mayor of Auservillgraten. No, not a mistake. The two community leaders actually have the same name. But the voter turnout is different: In Thurn it was very high at 91 percent, in Virgen it was very low at 57 percent.
