While these scripts seem functional in principle, they remain illegal, in addition to lacking an essential element.
Insecure and incomplete tools in the free version
To prevent users from directly downloading videos from their streaming platforms, large companies in the field such as Netflix, Amazon or Disney resort to the use of Widevine DRM. However, according to several repositories that have appeared on GitHub in recent days, this protection is far from infallible.
A user posted several tools that allow downloading videos directly from the most popular streaming platforms. However, these scripts come with several drawbacks. TorrentFreak, who reported on their existence, confirmed with one of his sources that these scripts work fine, but they are old, insecure, and anyone who uses them risks being banned or even sued by the platforms.
Second, if their provision seems free at first glance, they still lack an essential element: the Content Decryption Module (CDM, content decryption module). The latter makes it possible to decrypt content protected by DRM and, in the case of videos, to be able to play them on another platform. The user asks to be sent an e-mail to obtain it and warns that ” CDM is not free “.
TorrentFreak note that this kind of tool is not new, but is often distributed privately. Here, the person who posted them publicly appears to have done so to get revenge for some actions taken on a private Discord, in addition to wanting to make money.
These tools are perfectly illegal, it is therefore forbidden to use them and strongly discouraged from trying them, even out of pure curiosity.
