What exactly is this JBL Xtreme 3 speaker?

JBL retains the same design as the previous Xtreme, with a reduced weight all the same. This new version of the portable speaker weighs just under 2 kg for 30 cm long and is still impressive. A carrying strap accompanies the speaker, in order to transport it easily. With such measurements, the Xtreme 3 is fortunately robust and gives a strong impression of solidity. Silicone protectors on each side protect it in the event of a fall. It is also IP67 certified and resistant to dust and temporary immersion in water.

The interface is as usual simple and efficient. Buttons for Bluetooth pairing and for controlling playback and volume are present. Unfortunately, for this new version of the Xtreme speaker, JBL ignores the hands-free kit.

Is the JBL Extreme 3 for less than 200 euros a good deal?

It’s a good deal for a practical and resistant speaker. Audio level, the Xtreme 3 has two 70 mm woofers and two 20 mm tweeters. Unsurprisingly, these four speakers deliver plenty of power, ideal for outdoor use. At maximum volume, however, the sound loses quality and the speaker begins to spit and crackle. It nevertheless remains a speaker capable of a pretty technical feat in the restitution of bass and midrange at a more normal volume. The highs are correct and the timbres of the voice are precise. Too bad the clarity of the audio is lost if you are no longer facing the speaker.

The JBL PartyBoost takes care of the pairing in Bluetooth 5.1. You can pair two speakers, compatible with JBL PartyBoost mode, in stereo. The JBL Portable app, available on iOS and Android, only updates your speaker. Don’t look for an equalizer there, because JBL didn’t bother to put one in. Finally, JBL promises an autonomy of 15 hours. In fact, at normal volume, the Xtreme 3 will last an hour or two longer. Volume up, count just 10 hours of battery. It fully charges in 2 hours via the included USB-C charger.
