THE FILM OF THE DAY
From 1994, George Lucas set out to relaunch the Star Wars saga, which he initiated in 1977, through a prelogy exploring the origins of the famous villain Darth Vader. However, another antagonist quickly stole the show, despite his reduced presence in the first installment. Darth Maul has effectively become the emblematic figure of The Phantom Menace.
The latter is embodied by stuntman Ray Park, an expert in martial arts and the handling of weapons. On the strength of this experience, he performs all his stunts himself, including those necessary for the iconic duel between his character and Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Besides his dual lightsaber skills, the Apprentice Sith also impressed fans with his look – a long black cape, a grim red-stained face and a bald skull topped with several small horns – which required close to 2 hours of work. Finally, another disturbing detail: Darth Maul never blinks!
