After a few months of beta, Apple is officially launching three new applications on Windows: Apple TV, Apple Music and Apple Devices. Their goal is to put an end to the unloved iTunes.

In our opinions on the Apple firm’s streaming services, Apple TV+ (for films and series) and Apple Music, we particularly criticize the absence of applications for Windows. But that’s ancient history now. Apple has in fact, after a period of testing, adopted the same strategy already applied on macOS on Microsoft’s OS: three applications, Apple TV, Apple Music and Apple Devices, are there to replace as much as possible the aging factory. gas that is iTunes.

Three dedicated applications rather than just one

Available on the Microsoft Store for Windows 10 and Windows 11 (but not earlier or ARM64), these three applications must be downloaded together. It’s impossible to download just one. When using one, a message in iTunes will prompt you to recover the others. iTunes will still be used for reading podcasts and audiobooks, which do not fit elsewhere.

In Apple Music, we logically find purchases of albums and songs made in iTunes, but also access to the music streaming service. Same thing for Apple TV, but with series and films. In either case, to access content purchased on iTunes, you will need to keep the application installed, even if the purchased content will only appear in Apple TV and Apple Music. Finally, Apple Devices allows you to manage iPhone and iPad: updating, restoring, content management, etc.

iTunes hasn’t completely said its last word

Thanks to their dedicated and optimized interface, these three applications should therefore simplify the lives of users of Apple services. We are thinking in particular of subscribers to Apple TV+ or Apple Music, who now have a dedicated application on Windows.

On the other hand, by requiring the installation of several applications with the impossibility of deleting iTunes for those who have purchased content there, it is difficult to see this as a perfectly optimized experience.

Apple TV+

  • Sublime 4K and solid video throughput
  • Original content in HDR10 and Dolby Vision
  • Some very, very good series

Many months after its launch, the manufacturer does not have much to be ashamed of its platform. Certainly, the catalog remains light compared to the competition, but the series are all excellent. The service has opened up a little to third-party media and the video quality is undoubtedly the best currently available on the market. However, with its new high price, Apple is more than ever offering a dispensable product, but one that is worth trying at least for a few unmissable shows.
