“Once Hallig and back” and more: The five best TV feature films from the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts

“Einmal Hallig und zurück” with Anke Engelke and Charly Hübner is one of five TV films that make you want to see Germany’s far north.

With “Einmal Hallig und zurück” (2014), the first on Wednesday (5 July, 8:15 p.m.) shows a comedy film from 2014, which also makes you want to see Germany’s coastal regions. The shooting took place on the Hallig Langeneß, among other places. One of the two main actors, Charly Hübner (50), was still active as Rostock’s “Polizeiruf 110” commissioner Sascha Bukow (2010-2022).

That’s what “Once Hallig and back” is about

Gossip reporter Fanny Reitmeyer (Anke Engelke, 57) accidentally gets explosive information about an environmental scandal. A Scandinavian energy company bribed a politician to build an offshore wind farm in the North Sea. Because their clumsy investigations have stirred up too much dust, editor-in-chief Bernd Fliegner (Robert Palfrader, 54) sends them to an island for their own safety, pardon Hallig.

This is where the eccentric ornithologist Hagen Kluth (Charly Hübner) lives in the middle of the Wadden Sea and takes care of the salmon tern, which is threatened with extinction. Fanny relentlessly puts the eco freak to the test and finds out that the uncouth block is actually a fine fellow. Hagen finds that the chatterbox from the mainland is really getting on his nerves. However, when she tells him why she is actually hiding on the Hallig, the two realize that they have more in common than their interest in endangered birds…

However, other films also have a similar combination of popular Sunday crime stars and charming North Sea or Baltic Sea flair. Four TV feature films worth seeing from the North and Baltic Sea coasts.

“Five Days Full Moon” (2009)

Summer 1969: The Americans fly to the moon and Johanna’s life is in turmoil. While her family spends a few days in Hamburg, the innkeeper stays behind alone on the secluded Hallig to accommodate a guest. The hydraulic engineer Anton Brunner (Klaus J. Behrendt, 63) will carry out the necessary investigations so that the Halligen can be supplied with fresh water from the mainland. In these summer days, Anton and Johanna fall passionately in love with each other. When her family returns, she has to make a decision…

“Five Days Full Moon” is a successful North German version of the story of the award-winning Hollywood film “The Bridges on the River” from 1995, starring Meryl Streep (74) and Clint Eastwood (93). The film was shot in Husum, Nordstrand and on the Hallig Langeneß in the North Frisian Wadden Sea. Main actor Klaus J. Behrendt has been investigating as Commissioner Max Ballauf together with Alfred “Freddy” Schenk (played by Dietmar Bär, 62) in the popular “Tatort” from Cologne since 1997.

“Krauses Kur” (2009)

After the cycle of village policeman Horst Krause (played by the actor Horst Krause, 81) has gone haywire, the doctor immediately sends him to the Baltic Sea for treatment. But there Krause soon not only took the prescribed raw food and exercise therapy, but also the other spa comrades. Just as he is about to flee, he hears the phone call from the real estate agent, Schimmelpfennig, whose son Jonas is also being treated at the health clinic. It’s about the demolition of the nearby campsite, where Krause used to be as a child with his sisters Meta (Angelika Böttiger, 71) and Elsa (Carmen-Maja Antoni, 77)…

The turbulent comedy “Krauses Kur” is part of the spin-off series (2007-2022), which shows the former police officer from Brandenburg “Polizeiruf 110” (1999-2015) and his sisters in private. The film was shot on the Baltic Sea island of Usedom, among other places.

“Vadder, Cutter, Son” (2017)

Knud Lühr (Axel Prahl, 63) takes life as it comes. His family has always lived in a coastal town in Dithmarschen in western Schleswig-Holstein. Knud has not exactly distinguished himself through success and diligence. On the other hand, he is very busy and, in addition to shrimp fishing, makes a living with illegal sports betting. Actually, he sees everything quite relaxed. The only exception: his shanty tradition choir, for which he wants to get the coveted award for the 100th anniversary of the choir by all means. Unusually single-minded, Knud even quarrels with his partner Nadja (Judith Rosmair, 56). That’s not all, Knud’s “lost” son Lenny (Jonas Nay, 32) also turns up – after ten years of radio silence…

Axel Prahl has been known as Chief Inspector Frank Thiel in the successful Münster crime scene scene since 2002. The artist, who was born in Eutin, Schleswig-Holstein, raves about the shooting on the coast in the Dithmarschen region for “Vadder, Kutter, Sohn”. in an interview with the broadcaster: “These pictures and the mood on such a boat when you’re out at night and the stars are twinkling outside […] that’s a great moment – you hardly have to play anymore.”

“Mother, Cutter, Child” (2022)

Coastal fisherman Heddi (Anneke Kim Sarnau, 51) is self-confident and tough. It has to be, because cutter fishing has never been an easy business. And in times of overfishing, it can hardly make ends meet. But Heddi can’t be beaten. She has only one weak point: her daughter Eva (Zoe Moore, 30). She is an environmental activist and just as combative as her mother. There has been radio silence between the two for years. But now Eva, who lives in the big city, unexpectedly turns up with her son in the small Baltic Sea village…

“Mother, Kutter, Kind” was shot at Niendorfer Hafen and in Dahme on the Baltic Sea. Anneke Kim Sarnau has been playing profiler Katrin König in Rostock’s “Polizeiruf 110” since 2010 – until 2022 with the aforementioned Hübner, since then with his wife Lina Beckmann (42) as Commissioner Melly Böwe.
