“I seem to remember the games we invented together. I find in a smile, the flame of my memories…” If you know these words, then you have probably already seen Anastasia. This animated film released in 1997 (and which is not a Disney, contrary to popular opinion) takes us to Saint Petersburg in 1917.

The Empress Marie and her granddaughter Anastasia will be saved from the disastrous fate, caused by the revolution which befalls the imperial family, by a young kitchen employee: Dimitri. But fate separates them. Ten years after the fall of the Romanovs, a persistent rumor spread: the emperor’s youngest daughter might still be alive…

Inspired by a True Story

To write it, the screenwriters were inspired by the play Anastasiaitself based on the story of a certain Anna Anderson, a young girl who posed as the sole survivor of the assassination of the Russian imperial family in 1917.

For years, the country was divided over this question: was she a usurper or the real duchess?

This is the question we are trying to answer in this new episode of our podcast “This is a true story”, which looks at the true and little-known stories behind your favorite films and series.

You will see that in Anna’s case, the advances in science at the end of the 90s and the participation of a certain Prince Philip made it possible to close this chapter in Russian history. Even if even today, Anastasia remains at the center of many theories…
