One in seven adults lives with their parents

A survey by the Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics Department reveals that in France 7.3 million adults live with their parents, spouse or another person.

Unemployment, rent too expensive, many French people cannot live in their own accommodation. A finding that is felt in the survey conducted by Pauline Virot for the Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics Department (DREES). According to the latter, 4.7 million adults live with their parents. For 2 million adults, the solution is to live with their spouse, but what to say in the event of separation, this is very precarious. It is thus "the spouse occupying title of the accommodation that keeps it". In this case, people with the lowest economic resources may face significant difficulties in relocating. INSEE reveals that 160,000 adults live with one of their children. This fact particularly concerns 3% of women aged 75 or over. Still others, 270,000, live with another family member.

It should be remembered that living overseas as an adult is not so trivial. A difference with the metropolis.

There are therefore 30% who live with their brother or sister, 24% with their parent's spouse and 20% with their spouse's parent (s). The others are staying with their stepchild (2%) or with another member of their family (23%). There are many reasons for living with a family member: 27% are in a relationship with a household person (those who live with their spouse's parents), 20% are in this situation for health reasons (in particular those who live with their brother or sister), 15% wanted to be closer to the place of study or job and 13% are leaving a family breakdown. Finally, 12% are in this situation as a result of financial problems, more particularly those living with a brother or sister (16%), according to the DREES.

Note that for 165,000 adults, the cause of their lives in others is explained by health problems.

"In a context where the share of income devoted to housing expenses has increased for tenants since the 2000s and where the rise in property prices slows homeownership (Laferrère, Pouliquen, Rougerie, 2017), living Among others in adulthood represents one of the alternative solutions when it is difficult to access one's own accommodation ", we read in the study.

What profiles do these Tanguy have?

They are mainly students (4 out of 10), but do not generalize. In fact, 3 in 10 adults are employed and 2 in 10 are unemployed. Most of them are young (70% are between 18 and 24) and 57% are men. Three-quarters of them cannot afford housing. And a third of these young people would not want to leave the family home even if it were possible.

"Certain life incidents, such as family breakdowns or health problems can make people more precarious and are the subject of a particular interest of the public authorities", explains the analysis of the DREES.
