One of the best survival games of all time for the price of a kebab on Steam

Developed by a team of just 4 people, The Forest is what you might call a essential of the survival/sandbox genre. With its handcrafted world and its wheelbarrow of great ideas, it’s one of those titles you have to at least try once, even if you’re not a fan of the genre it’s in. It is currently at a particularly low price in Uncle Gabe’s shop, perhaps an opportunity to fill a hole in your video game culture. The offer should end on Monday, May 16.

The Forest in a nutshell

If The Forest looks like a very classic survival game during its first hour of play, its progression and its structure will quickly become much more original, with two distinct and yet clearly intertwined axes of progression within the experience. On the surface and therefore in the forest, you will be entitled to a rather classic survival/sandbox experience, with base construction and resource collection, punctuated by random encounters with an increasingly violent bestiary at as you explore.

But in the underground, the game will be much more interventionist and structured, with caves distributing elements of the scenario and new tools which will allow you to explore other more advanced caves (diving equipment, ice ax to climb certain cliffs, etc.). These two sides coexist wonderfully and make The Forest one of the best finished and most interesting survival games ever designed: if you like the genre, it’s simply a must.

A sequel planned for October 2022

And we can’t wait. Sons of the Forest is still quite mysterious at the time these lines are written, but the only trailer released shows that a priori, we should be on familiar ground. The gloomy atmosphere and the enemies reminiscent of those of Silent Hill 2 are still very present, as is the need to build strong defenses to avoid seeing your camp devastated by filthy critters.

The announcement went a little unnoticed and it must be said that we have time to see it coming, but in the meantime, the prospect of a new survival game by Funcom in the Dune universe is very good news and we explain why.
