One Piece on Netflix: by the way, what does the D. in Monkey D. Luffy mean?

But why is the main character of One Piece called Monkey D. Luffy? What is his connection to the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger?

Warning, this article contains spoilers for the sequel to One Piece.

Netflix subscribers discovered the live action adaptation of the One Piece manga a fortnight ago. In 8 episodes, the series has adapted around 12 mangas (out of the hundred already published) and around sixty episodes of the anime (out of the 1100 already available). Suffice to say that this season 1 has barely scratched the surface of the universe imagined by Eiichiro Oda. Several mysteries remain in One Piece, starting with the location of Gol D. Roger’s treasure, and its contents. But not only.

If you have been paying attention to the names of the characters in season 1 of One Piece, then the one worn by the elastic hero surely made you react: what could the D. mean in Monkey D. Luffy. And is there anything to do with the deceased pirate king, Gol D. Roger? Please note that at this time, we don’t really have a clear and defined answer. But the clues given by the author allowed fans to have some theories.

One Piece and the Will of the D.

We are not going to spoil certain plots of One Piece (we invite you to watch the anime or read the manga), nor go into detail, to explain the different theories to you. What we can tell you is that several characters in the universe have a D. in their surname, without necessarily being of the same lineage. In Luffy’s family, men share this commonality. In season 1, we met his grandfather, whose name is Monkey D. Garp.

The Pirate King, and his legendary smile at the moment of his death.

The bearers have a particularity, that of being bearers of a will, which they pass on to a new generation upon their death: the will to be king of pirates, the will to reign over the world, to bring down the government global, or just the desire to find companions and be happy. Faced with death, they leave with a smile on their lips (like Gol D. Roger). Moreover, the D. could represent a mouth that smiles.

According to some theories, it is a carrier of D who will create a cataclysm and change the world (without further details). Later in the manga, we learn that they are closely monitored by the World Government who consider them enemies of God, and that they are directly or indirectly linked to One Piece and Gol D. Roger …

No precise answer therefore, but it should be provided in the coming years, with the end of the One Piece manga.
