One Piece on Netflix: fans angry because of this change from the manga

The revelation of the first images of the live-action series “One Piece” on Netflix has sparked controversy among fans of the manga, forcing one of the actresses of the program to speak out on social networks.

When it comes to protecting their favorite artwork, One Piece fans are ready to step up. Proof of this is with the controversy sparked by the revelation of the first photos of the manga’s live-action series by Netflix. Although controversy is a big word…

Last week, the platform confirmed that the live action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga will be broadcast in 2023, revealing on this occasion visuals of the program introducing – from the back – the protagonists of this first season, to start with the hero of the series Monkey D. Luffy.

A detail concerning the appearance of the latter caught the attention of Internet users: his shoes. In the manga, Luffy sports a pair of sandals, while he appears outfitted in sneakers in the Netflix series. A change criticized by many fans, to the point that initial calls for a boycott (sic) have been launched on social networks!

Before a hashtag #SandalGate is taken up by the twittosphere, Emily Rudd – the interpreter of Nami in the series – spoke on social networks to justify this change of appearance:

Let’s hope that between now and its broadcast, the One Piece series won’t be talked about again by changing the color of Usopp’s bandana, or even by modifying the type of wood used for the floor of Vogue Merry!

The One Piece live action series, adapted from Eiichiro Oda’s manga (103 volumes available from Glénat editions), will be broadcast in 2023 exclusively on Netflix!
