The live action adaptation of the One Piece manga is about to see the light of day! A few weeks after the reveal of its cast, the Netflix series officially began filming this week, as confirmed on the networks by the main actors of the program, as well as the showrunner Steven Maeda (Helix).

Remember that it is the Mexican actor Iñaki Godoy who was chosen to lend his features to the main character of the series, Monkey D. Luffy. Young budding pirate, the latter inherited elastic powers after having devoured one of the fruits of the devil.

Luffy is accompanied by several traveling companions, forming the crew of the “Straw Hat”: Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu), Nami (Emily Rudd), Sanji (Taz Skylar) or even Usopp (Jacob Romero Gibson).

The complete distribution of the series has not yet been revealed, leaving doubts about the presence of other emblematic characters of the manga in this first season, such as Shanks the redhead or Baggy the clown.

Over the years, many live-action adaptations of Japanese manga or anime have not met with success with the public. The examples of Dragonball Evolution and more recently of Cowboy Bebop (cancelled at the end of its first season by Netflix) still haunt the minds of many fans, explaining why this project of adaptation of One Piece in series does not arouse much enthusiasm among readers of Eiichiro Oda’s manga (100 volumes available from Glénat editions).

Filming for several months, One Piece will not be broadcast on Netflix until sometime next year.
