Microsoft is planning a significant improvement for OneDrive. It will allow you to work completely with all your files offline. In an update to its Microsoft 365 roadmap, the company revealed this new OneDrive option, known as offline mode.
Scheduled to be available for preview in November and for general release in December, offline mode will allow you to access your files through your browser when you are offline, then sync all changes when you are back online .
“This feature will allow you to launch OneDrive in your browser and view, sort, rename, move, copy and delete files even without Internet access,” Microsoft explains. Additionally, for locally stored OneDrive files (those that are marked as “always available offline”), you will be able to open and work on them in your browser even if you are not online. Any changes made offline will be automatically synced when the internet connection is restored.”
AI in OneDrive
Currently, OneDrive’s offline capabilities are limited. Without Internet access, you can’t connect to your OneDrive online storage or work on your files through the browser. You can recover your OneDrive files in Windows, but only if you chose to keep them on the device. The ability to more easily use and manage your files offline will help anyone who has to work in a remote location without an internet connection.
OneDrive is one of those tools that works in the background, and therefore doesn’t always receive attention. Even Microsoft hasn’t launched any major improvements for the platform in quite some time, instead opting for minor updates every now and then. But OneDrive will therefore be subject to essential improvements.
Last week, Microsoft announced an online event scheduled for October 3 at 1 p.m. PST. Titled “Microsoft OneDrive: The future of file management is here,” the event will highlight new features of the file storage service and provide insight into how AI will power new searches, sharing and queries for your files.
In the context of excitement around artificial intelligence, Microsoft has already improved many of its products by equipping them with artificial intelligence. It’s now OneDrive’s turn to feed on AI.
After the event, Microsoft will allow attendees to ask questions in a live chat. Interested attendees can add the OneDrive event to their calendar and follow a link to join the event via Microsoft Teams when it begins.
