Microsoft is making some nice improvements to its cloud storage service. Enough to give it a little facelift?
OneDrive has been well integrated into Windows for several years, allowing users to sync their files between multiple devices, or share them with friends and colleagues. It is clear that the service has been appreciated by its users, and that it will perhaps be even more so in the months to come.
Between facade renovation, improved sharing and greater integration into the Xbox ecosystem, the winter will be a little less harsh for some.
A story of file deletion
If, normally, OneDrive asks for confirmation before deleting a file, this is not the case when it is a document shared by a third party. Problem solved, because the dialog box will also be there in the latter case. Likewise, deleting a shared shortcut will no longer delete the file associated with it.
Even more, File Explorer will soon have a side panel located on the right of the window which, like on Google Drive, will display the details of the selected file(s). Recommended documents, recent files and favorites will be highlighted on the home page.
On the interface side, the settings menu will also undergo a makeover. The most important functions will be displayed first, with the others moving to the advanced settings. These changes are expected to be rolled out in the coming months.
Finally, as announced at the beginning of September, it is now possible to automatically transfer clips and screenshots taken on Xbox to OneDrive. Enough to greatly facilitate their access on other devices. At the same time, the company will change the way it handles captured images by giving them a 90-day expiration period.
The service will notify you when a file reaches its expiration date, allowing you to transfer it to OneDrive or an external hard drive in time. This feature is already being deployed, so it should not take long for it to arrive on your favorite games console, available in “Carbon Black” for a few weeks.
