“Only Murders in the Building” is a complete success for the US streaming service Hulu. Immediately after the third season finale, it was announced that the series would be renewed for a fourth season. In this country you can see it streaming on Disney+. It’s still too early to give a start date, but since the previous seasons of “Only Murders in the Building” have always started in the summer, we assume that we will be able to see season 4 on Disney+ in the summer of 2024.

Only Murders in the Building: Plot

Season 3 ends with the successful premiere of “Death Rattle Dazzle!”, the musical by Oliver (Martin Short). During the performance it emerges that the murderers of Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) were producer Donna DeMeo and her son Cliff DeMeo.

Donna had poisoned a cookie with rat poison to incapacitate, but not kill, Ben at the premiere of the original play. After his miraculous resurrection, Ben discovers that it was Donna who wanted to poison him and a fight ensues with Donna’s son Cliff, in which Cliff ultimately pushes Ben down the elevator shaft and kills him.

After the murderers are arrested, there is a premiere party attended by Charles’ (Steve Martin) stunt double Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch). She wants to tell Charles something important in private, but unfortunately it doesn’t get that far. When she goes to get wine from Charles’ apartment, she is shot through the window. Since she is dressed like Charles, it stands to reason that Charles should actually be the victim of this attack.

Who is targeting Charles or Sazz? Of course, Sazz ventured into dangerous territory when she started dating Charles’ murderous ex-girlfriend. Does Jan (Amy Ryan) have a hand in it? After all, her old apartment is across the street from Charles’ apartment, the perfect location to shoot Charles in his apartment.

What is certain is that we will see a lot more of Sazz in the next season, as Mabel, Oliver and Charles have to clarify how her death came about.

Does Only Murders in the Building Season 4 take place in Los Angeles?

We also find out in the finale that Tobert, Mabel’s boyfriend, has taken a job in Los Angeles and that Loretta and Dickie are probably going to Los Angeles soon because Loretta is now in a spin-off of a “Grey’s Anatomy” spin-off role should play. We will therefore take a trip to Los Angeles, at least briefly, in the new episodes. Craig Erwich, who looks after the Disney companies ABC, Freeform and Hulu, has now confirmed this.

I’m so excited that Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez are taking a little break from the apartment building and coming to Los Angeles. I love New York – the characters, the richness, the depth are endless – and it’s a New York show, but I don’t want to be afraid of things that make you wonder, “What?”, “Where are we?” , “Where are you now?”. I think you have to do that so it doesn’t feel too isolated. The Arconia is our apartment building and just as we want to get out and be in New York as much as possible, I think you also have to remember this trio and the potential for everything that could happen in their lives and what leads to that they have to disappear for some reason.

In an interview with the US magazine TVLine, co-creator John Hoffman reveals that they could also explore the characters’ previous tenants or family relationships in the new episodes. However, he also wants to leave open the possibility that the characters will leave New York at some point. But the Arconia in New York should always play a role.

Only Murders in the Building: Cast

We’ll definitely see Martin Short as Oliver Putnam, Steve Martin as Charles-Haden Savage and Selena Gomez as Mabel Mora again. Meryl Streep’s return as Loretta Durkin is now also certain. This is pleasing, but unusual for “Only Murders in the Building”; previously prominent supporting characters have disappeared after a season or only returned for short guest appearances.

Whether we will see Mabel’s friend Tobert again in season 4 is a little less likely. He may only make a guest appearance in the new episodes, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Williams has just accepted a role in an upcoming Amazon series that could take his full attention.

Since Season 4 deals with the murder of Sazz Pataki, Jane Lynch will return in the new episodes.

We’ll probably see Andrea Martin as Joy Payne again, as Joy will certainly become a suspect because she and Charles didn’t break up on good terms. We may also expect a guest appearance from Scott Bakula. Joy texts Charles saying, “Scott Bakula says hi.” It remains to be seen whether they are romantically involved or whether Joy is simply responsible for his make-up at a job.

Molly Shannon (“The Other Two”) is new. She will appear throughout Season 3 as an influential Los Angeles businesswoman who is drawn into the New York investigation. Eva Longoria (“Desperate Housewives”) also joins the cast of “Only Murders in the Building.” According to insiders, her character will play a big role in solving the murder in season 4.

With Eugene Levy (“Holiday Against Will”), “Only Murders in the Building” has an old companion of Martin Short’s in the cast from season 4 onwards. The two actors come from Hamilton, Canada and began their careers on the comedy show SCTV. Levy and Short have also often collaborated and supported each other in films and shows.

Kumail Nanjiani (“Welcome to Chippendales”) is also new to the cast of “Only Murders in the Building” after a trip to Los Angeles. Nothing further is known about his role.
