Opel boss makes clear announcement: 2024 will be a decisive year for electric cars

Opel committed to the electric car early on and remains true to its intentions – even under new management. The Rüsselsheim-based company is taking a different approach than many of its competitors. That could accelerate the switch to electric. 2024 will be an important milestone for Opel boss Florian Huettl.

All models as electric cars: Opel boss has big plans until 2024

At Opel, the last curtain for combustion engines should fall in 2028, at least in Europe: “The transition to a purely electric car provider in 2028 is in full swing, the date for Europe is set”, explains Florian Huettl, who has been in charge of the German brand in the Stellantis Group since July. The new boss is sticking to his predecessor’s plan: Opel wants to lead the way with electric cars.

At the same time, the Rüsselsheimers are also going their own way. Because instead of designing new electric cars like many other manufacturers, such as VW, the focus at Opel is on electrifying the existing fleet. By 2024 there should also be an electrified version in each of the current series. The Astra is currently available as a hybrid, as well as the Corsa, Mokka and Zafira as all-electric versions.

This should also be the way for the other models. A real electric Astra is already expected in the coming year. The end of the Rüsselsheim flagship Insignia should not last long. “Also the Successors to Crossland and Insignia will be electric” Huettl continued (source: Welt). But it is not yet clear how some models will be electrified, as hybrids or BEVs?

However, the imminent end of hybrid funding and the entire market overview suggest that Opel is more likely to rely on purely electric drives becomes. In any case, a plug-in version of an Insignia successor is unlikely to live up to the status of a new flagship.

With the Manta, everything is already on the way to electric:

It is now also certain that the widely announced electric Manta will be built in series. In the middle of the decade, the cult car will come as an electric car back on the market, promises Huettl.

Risky course? Opel stays away from China

With the electric offensive, Opel also wants to grow beyond Europe. In contrast to other German brands, with over 90 percent a huge share of Opel business in Europe instead of. That should change, the international share should be pushed to over 10 percent by the end of 2017. However, in Stellantis fashion, they stay away from China.
