The open drug scene in a Zurich park in District 4 is not cleared by the police.
The city parliament decided this on Wednesday.
The city has been looking for a replacement location for a new contact point in the city center for a long time, but so far has been unsuccessful.
More and more addicts are consuming the cheap drug crack, especially during the day, in the Zurich bakery in District 4. This concerns local residents. In order to prevent a second Platzspitz, the SVP has called for a rigorous evacuation of the bakery complex – but the majority of the city government sees it differently.
Repression does nothing and “only leads to a shift in the scene,” says Hannah Locher from the SP. With Platzspitz in particular, it has become clear that expulsion or dissolution is not a sustainable solution, says Karin Rykart, head of security for the Greens. The problems would simply be moved to another location. The other parliamentary groups and the city council also agreed with this opinion.

Crack is essentially chemically modified cocaine that is smoked using so-called crack pipes. The effects are more intense, but also shorter-lived than with conventional cocaine. Along with heroin and methamphetamine, crack is considered the drug that has the highest potential for psychological dependency. Consumption can cause anxiety, aggression and depressive moods and, in excessive doses, can even lead to death. In recent years in particular, many countries have reported increasing problems with the drug. This is probably not least because it is easily available and relatively cheap.
