SFR and Bouygues Telecom want to install a 5G antenna in a town in Dordogne. But the location and the method make the town hall come off its hinges.
In the very small town of Siorac-en-Périgord (Dordogne), with barely more than 1,000 inhabitants, the project to install a 5G antenna is controversial. A group of residents and the municipality cite both health and aesthetic reasons to justify their opposition. Behind this project, we find the two telecom operators SFR and Bouygues Telecom.
The location of the 5G antenna annoys the municipality
The town hall of Siorac-en-Périgord, Didier Roques, received a registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt from SFR and Bouygues Telecom on February 21. The two operators then explain their project consisting of installing a 5G antenna in the town.
From the outset, the method bothers the councilor, who explains having already been approached a few years ago for an installation project. “ At least someone came to show it to us. », he adds. That’s just for form.
Regarding the substance, the mayor points to the location mentioned by the operators. The 5G antenna could be installed in the city center of the small town, in a residential area and more particularly opposite the station. What displeases Mr. Roques even more is the little regulatory game that SFR and Bouygues Telecom are allegedly playing.
The town hall deplores the stratagem of Bouygues and SFR
The regulations provide that a mobile antenna cannot be installed less than 100 meters from a nursery or school. Same thing for a castle, and there is one in Siorac-en-Périgord. This is obviously not the first time that operators have played with this limit to optimize the location of a pylon, and it must be recognized here that this is entirely their right.
Except that the little trick played by the operators, who plan to install the antenna exactly 110 meters from the school, does not please the mayor of the town nor the residents, almost half of them having signed a petition to denounce the project. Especially since the 27 meter high antenna would be located in front of homes.
As final arguments, Didier Roques recalls that the neighboring town, Urval, already has two antennas, and that his village will soon be equipped with optical fiber, which is finally eligible for it. So 5G, yes, for residents, but not with an antenna installed anywhere, they say. A new meeting is planned between local elected officials and operators this week.
