Orano signs a “major” contract with Japan

The French group will reprocess spent fuel from the Fugen nuclear power plant, near Kyoto.

This is timely news: while the French nuclear group Orano is now awaiting State arbitration in 2023 concerning the construction or not of a new spent fuel storage pool on its site in La Hague (Manche ), a contract worth around 250 million euros was signed on June 24 with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) for the transport and processing in France of 111 tonnes of materials from the Japanese power plant in Fugen, near of Kyoto.

Director of Orano’s recycling division, Pascal Aubret talks about “a major contract”which, according to him, “confirms the relevance of spent fuel processing as a responsible management solution for nuclear materials for our customers”.

The French company has even been working with Japan for fifty years, in particular with eight Japanese electricians for Mox fuel manufacturing contracts. But, we had to wait until June 15 and an exchange…
