But then why “black”? If one could think that this color was chosen in reference to “black people” stores, the origin would not be this. It would in fact be linked to the way in which businesses kept their accounts.
In most stores, at this time of year, accounts tended to be in deficit (the population waited until the end of year holidays to spend). As the account books were kept by hand, the traders therefore wrote in red (deficit). But the day after Thanksgiving, businesses recorded record sales and the numbers came out of the red.
Originally, we wrote in black. And it is this black color which would have given the name “Black Friday” or rather “Black Friday” in original language.

Unlike Christmas, Thanksgiving doesn’t fall on the same date every year, but the day of the week is always the same. The festival takes place on the fourth Thursday of the month of November. Black Friday takes place the next day, the fourth Friday in November. The next edition of Black Friday takes place on Friday November 24, 2023. But the promotions are not limited to this one day.
Although Black Friday only lasts 24 hours, merchants in France tend to offer early offers, but also offer them during the weekend following Black Friday. The last day of this consumerist madness has even been called Cyber Monday. It is the Monday following this famous weekend, a day during which promotions are held only on the internet.
Amazon, for example, will offer Black Friday promotions from November 17, 2023, until November 27.
