“I was wrong,” admitted Will Smith. Apologizing to Chris Rock after slapping him at the Oscars, the actor said he was opposed to all forms of violence.

Will Smith’s apology to Chris Rock was long overdue. And it was on his Instagram account that the actor finally apologized to the comedian after slapping him live, and on stage, during the Oscars ceremony. Condemning his behavior which he qualifies “unacceptable and inexcusable“, Will Smith said he was opposed to “violence in all its forms”. “Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”, he however justified himself. Coming on stage to present the Oscar for best documentary, Chris Rock cracked a clumsy joke on the shaved head of Will Smith’s wife when the actress revealed a few months ago to suffer from alopecia, pathological hair loss.

I’m embarrassed and my actions don’t represent the man I want to be.”, continued the American actor, Oscar winner on Sunday for his role in The Williams Method, before adding: “There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
After thirty years of career in Hollywood and while he enjoys considerable sympathy with the public, the Oscars ceremony was to be for Will Smith that of consecration. An evening unfortunately tainted by his gesture which deeply shocked the opinion but also the public present in the room. “I also want to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the participants and all the viewers around the world.”, wrote the actor.

The Academy of Oscars opens an investigation

If the Los Angeles police indicated that Chris Rock had not filed a complaint following this attack, the Academy of Oscars announced the opening of an investigation. “We will review any consequences in accordance with our charter and California law.,” the American Academy of Arts and Motion Picture said in a statement. It is not known for the moment what the sanctions could be formulated against Will Smith. According to the specialized American media, it is unlikely that Will Smith will lose his Oscar. On the other hand, he could be expelled from the Academy, or in any case suspended.
