  • The Academy Awards will take place on March 27, 2022 and this year there are 10 films in the running for the coveted “Best Film” trophy.
  • If you want to see all the films in the stream in time, you have to fall back on offers from the USA.
  • You can find out from us which Oscar hopefuls you can already stream and which titles you have to be patient with.

For many film fans, it’s a point of honor to have seen the Oscar-nominated films before the Academy Awards are presented. Because how can you keep your fingers crossed or get angry about the wrong winner if you don’t know all the titles and weren’t able to form an opinion?

However, this project often only succeeds through numerous visits to the cinema shortly before the Oscar ceremony, since the German distributors hold back films with award hopes until shortly before the Oscars in order to then benefit from the publicity.

Especially this year it is quite possible that you cannot or do not want to go to the cinema – what now? Well, luckily there are alternatives through which it is possible to watch all of the 10 nominated films in the Best Picture category in streaming. We tell you how you can watch each title in Germany, starting with the simple cases to the problem cases.

Don’t look up

The catastrophe satire by comedy expert Adam McKay (“Step Brothers”) is a Netflix production and can therefore be found easily and permanently in the streaming service’s program. It can be that easy!

The Power of the Dog

You don’t have to go to the far-flung arthouse cinema in your city to experience Benedict Cumberbatch as a silent cowboy, because “The Power of the Dog” is also a Netflix film. This year, Netflix can have double hopes for the coveted trophy.

CODA

Also “CODA” is easy to find in the world of streaming, but not on Netflix, but on Apple TV+. The US remake of the French tragic comedy “Do you understand the Béliers?” is definitely worth a look and should be reason enough to get to know Apple’s streaming service better if you haven’t already.

KingRichard

“King Richard” has been running in Germany since February 24, 2022, but in the USA the tennis drama with Will Smith could already be seen in November 2021 – one of those cases in which the German distributor waited for the Oscar season.

But that also means that “King Richard” will no longer end up on the German streaming services before the Oscars. So it’s worth taking a look at iTunes’ US offer, where you can rent the film for little money or buy it for around 20 US dollars.

Belfast

“Belfast” also waited a long time for its release in Germany and now shared February 24th as the theatrical release date with “King Richard”. The US iTunes Store will help you again here, again 19.99 US dollars will be charged for the purchase version and 5.99 US dollars if you only want to borrow “Belfast”.

West Side Story

Steven Spielberg’s musical remake “West Side Story” entered the Disney+ program on March 2nd.

The streaming service is using the Oscar push to promote “West Side Story” as an exciting Disney + highlight. In the cinema, on the other hand, the film went under, which could of course be different in the stream.

Drive My Car

At the time the nomination was announced, “Drive My Car” was still the biggest problem child among the 10 film hopefuls, after all there was still no information about the stream release. Fortunately, that has now changed, from March 2, 2022 you can see the film on the US streaming service HBO Max.

Licorice Pizza

“Licorice Pizza” can finally be streamed in the USA. The film, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, is currently only available as a digital purchase for $19.99, but as of March 15, “Licorice Pizza” has also been available to rent.

You can still see some Oscar highlights until March 27, 2022, until the awards are finally presented. You can of course find other interesting titles in Netflix’s new releases program, even if not all films there can hope for an Oscar.
