It’s not just at Ferrari that the order books are full. Thus, the GMC manufacturer, belonging to the General Motors (GM) group, has just announced that the Hummer in electric version, pick-up and SUV format, was out of stock over the next two years or more, according to Duncan Aldred, global vice president of GMC and Buick.
A finding caused by a supply chain problem and an acceleration in the production of new emblematic electric vehicles. Consequently, the objective of delivering some 400,000 electric vehicles in North America by 2023 is not likely to be achieved, due to a lack of sufficient stocks.
We remember that in October 2020, GMC had opened pre-orders for its Hummer EV Edition 1 (from $112,595) whose production was to begin in the fall of 2021. It had taken only 60 minutes for buyers to s monopolize the entirety of this limited series.
Currently, GMC has nearly 90,000 registered pre-orders across all versions. The manufacturer has announced that it has produced only 2,750 copies of its Hummer, with an acceleration in September 2022, however, since 700 pick-up version vehicles have been manufactured, i.e. “30% of all units built“.
To meet demand, GM relies heavily on its Ultium Cells battery plant in Lordstowm, Ohio, which it owns with LG Chem, the cell supplier. At a cost of 2.3 billion dollars, it is the same area as 30 American football fields and its annual capacity will be more than 30 GWh.
Meanwhile, the Hummer EV manufacturing facility, Michigan-based GM Factory Zero, is due for upgrades. This must be able to produce the group’s future electric models, namely the Cadillac Lyriq as well as the future Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV. As a result, Hummer EV production is currently interrupted for the entire month of November 2022.
Recall that in March 2020, General Motors announced its intention to produce 22 different models of electric vehicles by 2023, including 10 by 2021.
