Thanks to IMAP and POP, you can integrate almost all other e-mail providers in Outlook. We show you how it works with GMX, Web.de, Gmail and Co.
With Outlook you have the option of conveniently managing several e-mail accounts in parallel. The software is therefore ideal as the main message center on the computer. In contrast to the operation in the Internet browser, you can use the numerous special features of the application when composing and managing e-mails.
Since you can also use the two standard protocols for e-mail applications, POP and IMAP, in Outlook, services such as GMX, Web.de and Gmail can be quickly and easily integrated into Outlook. We’ll show you how to do it.
POP and IMAP
In addition to the POP protocol, which was very popular in the past, Outlook also supports today’s IMAP standard. While with POP all emails are deleted from your inbox after they have been downloaded, with IMAP they remain there and can still be read via other applications such as a provider’s web interface. Outlook automatically recognizes the settings of the most important email providers and can set up your account with IMAP in a few seconds.
To manually set up your provider with Outlook, you need the address of a POP or IMAP server for retrieving your e-mails and the address of a so-called SMTP outgoing mail server for sending, as well as the port number for each individual server. In addition, you also need the respective supported encryption, which we specify at the end (SSL, TLS).
Before we show you how to enter this in Outlook, you will find the server addresses with their port numbers for the most important free mail providers in Germany in the following overview.
