Next to Squid Game and Stranger Things
Indeed, such success allows Dahmer to become the streaming service’s third series to reach this impressive milestone, with Season 4 of Stranger Things (1.35 billion) available earlier in the year, and Squid Game (1.65 billion), released in 2021. A “monster” success which confirms the good momentum of the series, which remained number 1 of the most watched Netflix series during the three weeks after its release.
It’s not the series’ first good score: with 865 million hours watched in its first month on the air, Jeffrey Dahmer’s murderous journey established itself as the second most popular English-language series on Netflix, behind Stranger Things.
Since its release at the end of September, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story raised the crowds as much as the controversy: the series was accused of glamorizing the cannibal serial killer, author of 17 murders of young men between 1978 and 1991. Several victims had also spoken to take offense at the program. In writing, we admire the performance of Evan Peters in the main role and the authenticity of the adaptation. But the series itself is particularly unsustainable, and is not recommended for a sensitive audience.
Dahmer was originally planned to be a limited series, but the success of the program created by Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Glee) upended Netflix’s plans, which renewed it for two seasons, which will deal with other famous serial killers.
