Overwatch 2: the World Cup returns in 2023

Now thatOverwatch 2 was finally released last October, in free-to-play, Blizzard intends to keep its multiplayer shooter alive for as long as possible. It goes through a shop in-gameseasonal events and additional content such as Heromaps and game modes.

But it also happens with e-sports events, like theOverwatch League which will be back for a sixth edition next year, as well as the world Cup. Eh yes, after three long years without seeing the national teams compete to determine the World championthe WorldCup will be back in 2023. Blizzard already shares the calendar of the event, which will take place in several stages until the final stages at the end of next year. The studio details:

In January, we will announce the 36 countries and regions that will participate in the Overwatch World Cup 2023, and that’s also when applications for competition committees will be open. Each competition committee will be responsible for organizing tryouts for their country and region, as per Blizzard guidelines.

In addition to the regular drafts, we are introducing a new possibility for players to fight for a place in their team. This is an open tournament format: World Cup events. In February, the World Cup Trials competition will allow winning players to earn a direct place in their team’s trials. Players will still be able to sign up for the regular tryouts that will take place in March. Regular Trials will require a Competitive Rank of Diamond and above, so aspiring players should start working their way up now!

In 2023, we’ll also be offering challenges and rewards to all players to celebrate the return of the Overwatch World Cup.

In June, once roster rosters are finalized, Overwatch World Cup qualifiers are expected to take place through online regional competitions, whittling down 36 teams to 16 for the next phase of the tournament. These 16 teams will then face off in a LAN in the fall of 2023 to determine our first World Cup champion since 2019.
