In a press release published at the end of last week, Panasonic announces that it has developed a new technology for the manufacture of lenses. The latter is supposed to allow cheaper mass production, but also better performance and increased reliability for camera lenses, but potentially also for the modules of our smartphones

In parallel with the photo sensors designed by the brand and its competitors, Panasonic is also working to improve the quality of its lenses. In a press release shared on January 27, the Japanese giant announced that it had developed “ a technology for the mass production of far-infrared aspherical lenses to improve the performance of cameras and sensors “. With this new technology Panasonic hopes to kill several birds with one stone.

Pana bets on far infrared

The brand explains that it has based its lenses on chalcogenide glass, used in the optical sector for its excellent transmission properties in far infrared, rays that cannot be seen by the human eye, but which are emitted by all objects that have heat, explains Panasonic in an explanatory note. ” Far infrared sensors do not need illumination and can recognize the surrounding environment even in the dark, such as at night “, adds the mark.

It is in particular the use of chalcogenide glass that allows the new lenses from Panasonic to improve the performance of the photo sensors they are designed to accompany.

Cheaper, more reliable, more efficient lenses…

As pointed out GSMArena, Panasonic’s new technology allows the manufacture of aspherical and diffractive lenses of various sizes, but this is not necessarily its main asset. One of the great qualities of this process is indeed to allow the assembly of modules without any adhesive being used. Doing without it considerably reduces the risk of gaseous contamination inside the module (or the lens). The effectiveness of the latter, and its longevity, are therefore theoretically reinforced. Doing without adhesive also makes it possible to adjust the lens more precisely on the barrel.

Also in its press release, Panasonic explains that it is ready to send prototypes to its partners. The brand also claims to be able to quickly launch mass production of these new lenses. They could therefore quickly make their way to us.
