The panda bear, who has been living in Malaysia on loan from China since 2014, had a cub on Monday in the zoo in the capital Kuala Lumpur, the country’s animal welfare agency announced on Wednesday. The father is Xing Xing, who came to Malaysia with Liang Liang.
Breeding pandas in captivity is difficult. The fact that a female panda gives birth three times in a zoo can therefore be considered a great success.
Liang Liang now takes care of her cub. Her keepers have not yet been able to take a closer look at the tiny baby panda and therefore do not know its gender.
In 2015, Liang Liang gave birth to her first cub, Nuan Nuan. In 2017, the female was brought to the People’s Republic in accordance with China’s agreements with panda host countries. The female Yi Yi was born in 2018. Because of the restrictions in the wake of the corona pandemic, Liang Liang’s second child is still in Malaysia. Liang Liang and Xing Xing are expected to stay in Malaysia until 2024.
According to estimates by the environmental organization WWF, around 1,800 giant pandas still live in the wild. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the species as “endangered”.
