Paris: a new record broken in 2021, with 121,488 trees recycled

As every year, the Parisian municipality organizes the collection and recycling of Christmas trees. For this, 174 collection points have been scattered throughout Paris. This year, 121,488 trees were recycled.

A new record was broken this year, with a total of 121,488 trees recycled after being placed in the 174 bins provided for this purpose. The operation lasted nearly a month, from December 26 to January 20.

If most of these tree planters were installed in city parks and gardens, such as the Nelson Mandela garden, in front of the Saint-Eustache church (1st), in the Trocadéro gardens (16th) or even in the Parc des Buttes- Chaumont (19th), some have been placed directly in the public space, such as along the Champ-de-Mars (7th), on the central reservation at the Porte de Charenton (12th) or Place des Ternes (17th). ).

Fir trees transformed into natural weed killer

According to the municipality, it is above all a question of “giving a second life” to the Christmas trees, which will be reused “to protect the plantations in the green spaces” of the city. How? ‘Or’ What ? Thanks to crushing machines, which directly crush the fir trees on site, in order to transform them into wood chips.

“An ecological gesture” therefore, while this “crushed material” is then used by gardeners “as a natural weedkiller” in the form of mulch and spread at the foot of the massifs and on the paths. “This makes it possible to reduce the appearance of free grass in an ecological way, to limit the evaporation of water and to promote the development of underground micro-organisms which improve the life of the soil”, welcomes the institution.

Placing your tree directly in the street is punishable by a fine.

Already last year, the record for trees collected was beaten with 121,146 trees recycled, out of 170 collection points. That is approximately 2,400 m3 of shredded material. A constantly increasing figure, while 115,250 fir trees had been recovered in 2019-2020 at 195 collection points, 97,300 in 2018-2019 at 174 collection points and 85,209 in 2017-2018 at 164 collection points.
