Paris wants to drive SUVs out of the city by hitting drivers’ wallets


Faced with the growing environmental challenge, Paris is opting for a radical measure by tripling parking fees for vehicles deemed heavy and polluting. This decision, the result of a close vote, aims to limit the presence of SUVs on the streets of the capital, in favor of a healthier living environment and a notable reduction in pollution.

A recent analysis shows that vehicle dimensions are increasing, particularly those of SUVwhich creates complications for the urban parking. This development is particularly visible. For example, Tesla’s Model Y, which stands out as the best-selling electric vehicle in Europe, highlights the trend towardsincrease in the size of new cars.

In the sector of electric cars, SUVs feature prominently among the most popular models in France. Faced with this situation, the city of Paris proposed a controversial solution: significantly increase parking rates for these heavy and bulky vehicles, with the aim of discouraging their use in city centers and promoting more sustainable mobility.

Paris cracks down on SUVs and triples their parking fees

The popular consultation resulted in approval of 54.55% in favor of increasing prices parking for heavy cars. Of the 1.3 million voters summoned, only 78,000 participated, reflecting a low mobilization of 5.68%. This election mainly targets SUVs and 4x4swhose bulky and polluting presence in the streets of Paris is now priced at 18 euros per hour in central areas and 12 euros elsewhere, applicable from September 1st.

This decision provoked varied reactions. Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris, considers this result a step forward for public health and the environment, despite the low participation. Conversely, the opposition criticizes the legitimacy of this measure in view of the modest mobilization and the close outcome of the vote. The distinction is made for residents and certain professionalswhich will not be subject to this increase, highlighting a desire to reconcile environmental necessity and minimal impact on the daily life of Parisians. On the side of motorist associations, the latter question the categorization of SUVs, calling it a “marketing name” with no real basis. The political opposition sees this as a maneuver by the city, accused of specifically targeting them while the measure could affect a wider range of vehicles.
