  • The parliamentary elections are coming to an end in Slovakia. Over 98 percent of the votes have been counted.
  • The former head of government Robert Fico, who is considered Russia-friendly, has so far achieved 23.4 percent.
  • The liberal party “Progressive Slovakia” has the second most votes so far with 16.75 percent.
  • The elections are also crucial in terms of military support for Ukraine.

The EU and NATO country borders directly on Ukraine and is one of the most committed political and military supporters of the neighboring country attacked by Russia. However, military aid is controversial among the population. Parts of the left-wing opposition and two right-wing parties want to end the arms deliveries if they come to power after the election.

Civil service government is replaced

A total of 25 parties are running. According to opinion polls, nine of them have a realistic chance of entering parliament in Bratislava. The four parties that formed a divided conservative-populist-liberal coalition from 2020 to March 2023 are at acute risk of falling out of parliament. A civil servant government under Ludovit Odor has been in office since the spring, but it cannot rely on a parliamentary majority.

The polling stations are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. In the event of technical problems, an extension is possible. Partial results of the vote counting are to be announced during the night on Sunday. The final result is expected on Sunday morning.
