Fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier, who also worked for Princess Diana, died on Thursday at the age of 78.

Renowned fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier (1943-2022) has died. The French artist who once worked as Princess Diana’s (1961-1997) personal photographer passed away on Thursday, it says on his Instagram account: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Patrick Demarchelier on March 31, 2022 at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife Mia, his three sons Gustaf, Arthur, Victor and three grandchildren.”

The Frenchman was reportedly contacted by Princess Diana in 1989 after she saw one of his pictures on the cover of Vogue. During their first shoot together the following year, the famous black and white photo of Diana was taken in a strapless dress with a tiara.

Diana then asked Demarchelier to work as her personal photographer – making him the royal family’s first non-British official photographer, according to media reports. According to the Daily Mail, he once said About Lady Diana: “We became friends. She was funny and nice – but basically she was a very simple woman who liked very simple things.”

Hollywood stars also posed for him

In addition to Diana, big stars such as Madonna (63), Kate Moss (48) and Beyoncé (40) also stood in front of Demarchelier’s camera over the course of his career. The photographer’s works often graced the covers of “Vogue”. His name is mentioned in the film “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006). He also had a cameo appearance in the first film of the cult series “Sex and the City” (2008).

Numerous celebrities who have worked with Demarchelier trust the “legend” on social media. Among them are Priyanka Chopra (39), Gigi Hadid (26) and Hailey Bieber (25). Kate Hudson, 42, wrote in the comments on the photographer’s Instagram account: “I have always loved working with Patrick. So sad to hear of his passing. Sending lots of love to his family.”
