Payday 3 gets destroyed, the studio speaks out


Payday 3 is literally getting destroyed on Steam. The studio apologizes and speaks to reassure players. A difficult launch.

Recently, Payday 3 was released in early access on PS5, Xbox Series and PC via Steam in particular. A highly anticipated cooperative heist game that follows one of the biggest hits on the Valve platform. However, the launch clearly did not go as planned, and the players are angry, very angry.

As good as the game is (our test is coming soon), Starbreeze’s cooperative shooter did not have strong enough shoulders to withstand the arrival of players. However, even if the game started very well, especially on Steam, like most big releases, it did not shatter the records as other behemoths were able to do this year, like Baldur’s Gate 3 or even Starfield. Despite everything, the launch went very badly, and even worse, at present, problems still persist.

Matchmaking is unstable, even when you want to play privately, games start when they want to, invitations don’t always work… the servers have been out of steam for several days and anger is brewing. Currently on Steam, Payday 3 is being completely destroyed. A rather significant review bombing which caused its rating to drop to red with the mention “rather negative”. Out of a total of around 20,000 reviews, more than 17,000 are negative.

The studio apologizes and promises change on consoles and PC

It hurts a lot, especially since Starbreeze has come a long way. The studio found itself in trouble a few years ago, narrowly saved by Digital Bros. after a totally failed Overkill’s The Walking Dead. The studio held on, continued to support Payday 2 before throwing itself body and soul into the development of Payday 3, still stigmatized by what it had just gone through. Finally, the game was released a few days ago on consoles and PC, notably on Steam, and the rest is history. But if things are somewhat difficult at the moment, Starbreeze wants to reassure players. Solutions are being deployed little by little, the teams are working night and day to stabilize the game. The studio’s big boss, Tobias Sjögren, even apologized on X (Twitter). He states that he and his teams are “sorry to see that the infrastructure was not able to hold up”, but that the studio had not planned for all the possible scenarios and that they should have been ready. He then adds that the developers are working hard to rectify the situation.

At the time of writing, the servers are still having problems on consoles and PC. The servers always have a little trouble and are especially unstable. So we’ll see when all this is resolved. Really a shame, especially since the game itself is far from bad. But we’ll tell you about that this week in our test.
