The standards follow one another with ever greater speeds for our graphics cards and our SSD.

If PCI Express 5.0 is finally supported by motherboards (Intel Alder Lake only), no device is able to exploit this new technology. Never mind, PCIe 6.0 is already finalized, and PCIe 7.0 is coming…

A planned release for 2025

Indeed, the PCI-Special Interest Group, a group of more than 900 companies in the sector responsible for developing future changes to the standard, announces that work on the new standard has begun.

Of course, it will still take a while for everyone to agree on the specifications to be retained and for these to then be validated. In the case of PCIe 5.0, it took just under 2.5 years, and a little more in the case of PCIe 6.0.

It is therefore not surprising to see the PCI-SIG indicate that the final specifications of PCI Express 7.0 are not expected before 2025. On this date, the partners will be able to really develop their products.

512 GB/s on an x16 link

Who says evolution of PCI Express, of course says increase in authorized bandwidth and, in this little game, PCIe 7.0 will once again be very strong: we are talking about 128 GT/s per line.

This amounts to doubling what PCIe 6.0 allowed, while the latter already doubled the PCIe 5.0 offer. Extended to the maximum theoretical throughput of an x16 link, this amounts to offering no less than 512 GB/s. As shown in the graph above, the rate of evolution since PCIe 4.0 would thus be maintained: doubling of throughput every 3 years.

Such a progression is made possible by pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) at 4 levels, as was already the case with PCIe 6.0. The PCI-SIG also evokes better electrical efficiency, low latency and, of course, backward compatibility of the standard.
