It is a bold statement that Peer Kusmagk shares on Instagram on International Women’s Day. In it, the actor revealed in relationships “the violence [s]to have used one voice and words”.

These are words that moderator and actor Peer Kusmagk, 46, may have found difficult, but with which he no longer wanted to hide behind the mountain. On the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2022, the now three-time father speaks openly on Instagram about his experiences with domestic violence – and describes himself as part of the problem.

Peer Kusmagk: “In retrospect, I’m ashamed of it”

In the rather blurry and dark picture that Peer posted on his Instagram account, he looks older than he actually is. His blank stare seems to be peering through the camera. The first sentence of his contribution hits like a force: “Domestic violence has many faces. I’m one of them, because I’ve also used the power of my voice and words to assert myself and my opinion within a relationship with women [sic].”

The husband of the former professional surfer Janni Kusmagk, 31, explains further: “That too is violence and not okay and I’m ashamed of it afterwards.”

Peer had to learn to deal with his anger better

This openness met with a lot of positive feedback. One user commented: “Strong contribution and my greatest respect for your self-reflection”. Because Peer admits his weaknesses and mistakes. He writes: “Dealing with anger can be learned and was important for me to be able to live in peace with each other on equal terms.”

He wanted to “encourage people to get up even more for exactly this reason, to seek or allow help” and concludes: “Because flowers don’t help against psychological injuries.”

Kusmagk’s words encourage another follower to report on their own experiences. “Wow. I experienced it. And I’m so incredibly moved by your text. It feels so good. So good that a man is writing it.” Another describes Peer’s words as “sincere and honest gift to all women”.

It speaks for the statement that almost without exception there are admiring and affirmative comments.
