The pension reform must arrive in committee in the Senate on February 28, ten days after its examination at first reading which ended in confusion in the National Assembly. The senators, although mostly in favor of postponing the legal age to 64, could make some changes.
After the confusion in the National Assembly, the pension reform must land on February 28 in committee in the Senate, then in public session on March 2 next. If senators have been defending for several years the postponement of the legal retirement age to 64, they should still make some changes to the text. Among the avenues considered are the recalculation of beneficiaries of long careers, the questioning of the grandfather clause for special schemes or the introduction of a family policy essential, according to them, to rebalance the pay-as-you-go system.
Debates at the same time as the next events
The objective of these proposals is to provide financial leeway greater than that provided by the government, which has multiplied social concessions in recent weeks. It should be noted that the senators will debate the initial text of the government in which therefore appears in particular the senior index, however rejected by the deputies.
These debates will collide with future demonstrations, including that of March 7 where the unions are already calling for a blockage of the country. For its part, the executive is confident in the outcome of the vote in the Senate. The Upper House, which will be open even on weekends, has 15 days to examine the reform. At the end, a mixed parity commission, composed of seven senators and seven deputies, will meet to come up with a common text, then submitted to the vote of the two chambers.
The possibility of a 49.3 cannot be ruled out, even if it is not currently the solution favored by the executive.
