Pension reforms: what is the rate of strikers?

The showdown continues against the pension reform. Five days after a renewed mobilization, tarnished by numerous overflows, the social movement is off again for a round. Shortage of fuel in 16.3% of service stations

Some 16.3% of service stations in France are in short supply of at least one of the fuels (gasoline and/or diesel) they offered on March 1, according to calculations made by Fig Data. Among them, 7.2% are dry following the mobilizations in the refineries against the pension reform. The most affected department today is Mayenne with 54.5% of stations in shortage of at least one fuel.

Decline in electricity production

EDF accounts for 21.5% of strikers at midday, a decline in participation compared to March 23 at midday (25.3%).

In the electricity sector, production cuts continue. According to the CGT, 14,763.7 MW in the power stations (nuclear, thermal and hydraulic) thus passed into the hands of the strikers cumulatively over the day, or the equivalent of the power of 14 nuclear reactors. The strike movement also leads to “stop blocks” and D'”activitieson nuclear power plant sites.

Mobilization is running out of steam in the public service

After a renewed mobilization on March 23, the rate of strikers plunged back into the civil service on Tuesday, only 6.5% of state civil servants having stopped work at midday, according to the government. In this branch of the public service, which has a total of 2.5 million agents, 15.5% of strikers had been identified by the ministry on Thursday during the previous day of mobilization, the first after the government resorted to 49- 3 to pass its pension reform.

Tuesday in the middle of the day, the rate of strikers reached 3.4% in local authorities (2 million agents) and 5.4% in the hospital public service (1.2 million agents).

Figures there also down from those of March 23 (6.5% of strikers in the territorial and 8.1% in hospitals).

The mobilization was however even weaker during the day of March 15, with rates of strikers varying from 2.2% to 4.5% at midday according to the branches of the public service.

Garbage collectors suspend strike

The CGT of the waste and sanitation sector announces the suspension, from Wednesday, of the strike of garbage collectors in Paris and the blocking of incinerators, which have caused the accumulation of garbage in the streets of the capital since March 6. “We need to discuss again with the agents of the waste and sanitation sector of the city of Paris in order to go back to the strike stronger (…) because we have almost no more strikers“, recognizes in a statement the CGT-FTDNEEA which brings together garbage collectors, sewers, skip drivers of the capital.

About 7,300 tonnes of garbage still litter the streets of the capital, according to the metropolitan union Syctom. The volume of waste in the streets of Paris has increased to 7,300 tonnes against 8,000 on Sunday and 10,500 on Friday, according to the town hall.

Transport still disrupted

The provisional rate of strikers reached 16.5% Tuesday noon at the SNCF, a mobilization down from the previous ones. In addition, participation is estimated at 11.06% in colleges, 7.33% in general and technological high schools, and 6.57% in vocational high schools.

These figures are down sharply from March 23: that day, 21.41% of teachers were on strike, according to the ministry, including 23.22% in the first degree and 19.61% in the second degree.

Some 30% of primary school teachers will be on strike on Tuesday for the new day of mobilization against the pension reform, predicted the Snuipp-FSU, the first union in nursery and elementary schools.
