Peppa Pig: a homoparental family for the first time in the cult cartoon

In an episode of “Peppa Pig” airing Tuesday, September 6 in the UK, Penny the Polar Bear introduced her two heroin mums. This addition is the result of a 2019 petition that called for the inclusion of a gay couple.

In recent years, Peppa Pig is undoubtedly one of the favorite cartoons of children. Created in 2004 by Neville Astley and Mark Baker, it features the adventures of Peppa the sow, who loves to laugh and jump with both feet in mud puddles. The little one is always surrounded by her little brother George the pig and his parents.

The very famous British cartoon aired this Tuesday, September 6, a new episode on Channel 5 which introduces a couple from the LGBTQ+ community for the first time. Indeed, Penny the polar bear introduced Peppa to her two mothers: “I live with mom and my other mom” she explained to him with a drawing. “A mom is a doctor and a mom cooks spaghetti.

The creators decided to add a homosexual couple following a petition from 2019 which called for the inclusion of same-sex parents in the cartoon. However, it took more than 23,000 signatures to convince them:

Children who watch Peppa Pig are at an impressionable age and excluding same-sex parents may teach them that only single-parent families and families with different-sex parents are normal.”, they added.

Since its creation, Peppa Pig has been exported to more than 180 countries, in particular by now being available in the Netflix catalog. The creation of a homoparental family is therefore a great victory for the signatories who still had to wait three years before winning their case.

Peppa Pig is broadcast on France 5. It is also available in full on France TV and on Netflix.
