“Perfect Next Step”
Sandro Wagner gets a coaching job at the DFB

Sandro Wagner has played eight times for the German national soccer team. As a coach, the former striker recently led SpVgg Unterhaching to promotion to the 3rd division. Now the ex-professional is returning to the DFB and taking on a coaching job in the youth field.

Former national player Sandro Wagner is moving to the German Football Association and will be the new assistant coach of the U20 national team. The 35-year-old previous coach of SpVgg Unterhaching is moving to Hannes Wolf’s coaching team for the new season, as the DFB announced. “After my first few years as a coach, this is the perfect next step for me,” said the former Bundesliga professional, according to the announcement. The sporting director of national teams at the DFB, Joti Chatzialexiou, praised Wagner as an “outstanding personality”.

Wagner, who was promoted to the 3rd league with Haching during his first coaching position in seniors, is also a TV expert at ZDF. The former striker had meanwhile also been traded as a U19 coach at FC Bayern. “At the DFB I will get new insights that will help me in my personal development,” said the 2009 U21 European champion. Just two weeks ago, Wagner, who had scored five goals in eight international matches, announced: “I just want to do it now only sit in and learn for a year. I need vacation and rest. It was all too much, even with the television. I’m through and now I’m doing less.”

In the course of Wagner’s commitment, the DFB announced further personal details. The previous U19 coach Guido Streichsbier is leaving the association after nine years. The 53-year-old will be Gerardo Seoane’s assistant coach at Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach. The previous U20 assistant coach Hanno Balitsch follows Streichsbier and takes over the new U18 national team from September. The youth coaches of the DFB support the teams for several years.
