Periarthritis of the shoulder, quesaco? : Current Woman Le MAG

If periarthritis can affect all the joints of the body, it seems to have a certain predilection for that of the shoulder, in particular because it is one of the most stressed mobile joints. It is therefore the site of various forms of inflammation, such as tendinitis which is characterized by damage to the tendons, or even bursitis which results from the inflammation of the pockets of fluid surrounding the joints (serous bursae). There is also a form of calcifying periarthritis manifested by the presence of crystals in the shoulder.

What symptoms?

Whatever the origin of the inflammatory process, periarthritis manifests itself mainly by localized joint pain or which can sometimes radiate along the arm or neck. It is not uncommon for this painful sensation to hinder the performance of certain movements. In some people, the inflammation causes a noticeable stiffening of the joint, a symptom that some specialists describe as shoulder "jelly". While this type of joint pathology can potentially affect everyone, there is an increased risk with age, however.

What treatment?

The medical management of periarthritis of the shoulder first requires carrying out a diagnostic assessment aimed at precisely determining the source and location of the inflammation. The choice of treatment strategy will depend on the intensity of the symptoms and the underlying cause. In addition to anti-inflammatory therapy to relieve pain, physiotherapy sessions are sometimes recommended, while surgery will only be considered as a last resort.
