If Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla has his way, the corona vaccine for children should soon be approved. For this, the pharmaceutical giant is now preparing an application for approval from the American drug authorities.
“It’s a matter of days, not weeks,” Bourla replied on Sunday to the ABC news channel when asked when Pfizer would apply for approval of the corona vaccine for children. In the USA, children under the age of 12 could then also be vaccinated against corona.
Production is being prepared
This could also have an impact on Switzerland. So far, the vaccines from Pfizer / Biontech and Moderna have been approved for children aged 12 and over. If the application is approved in the USA, a corresponding application could also follow in Switzerland.
Biontech founder Özlem Türeci announced in September that the production of a vaccine for children was imminent. The vaccine is the same, but less dosed, according to Biontech chief physician Türeci.
No recommendation yet in Switzerland
“In the coming weeks we will present the results of our study on the five to eleven year olds worldwide to the authorities and apply for approval of the vaccine for this age group, including here in Europe,” said Türeci.
There is currently no recommendation in Switzerland that children under the age of 12 should also be vaccinated. (zis)
