Samsung Pay was one of the most open payment solutions so far when it comes to device choice. But some users have come to complain about issues that prevented them from using the service on a smartphone from another brand.
Samsung has so far been a good student on the side of payment methods and still lets other brands use a version of its Samsung Pay solution dedicated to the Galaxy Watch. The solution that has become Samsung Wallet since its merger with Samsung Pass was generally associated with smartphones from the Korean brand, this largeness in terms of compatibility with other devices has recently been called into question.
A somewhat constraining software bug
Samsung Pay users on Reddit recently observed a service failure on non-Samsung smartphones with an error message telling them that their ID was no longer valid.
A user who reported the problem on the Samsung Community forum received the response that the Samsung Pay service would no longer work on smartphones other than those of the brand.
However, such a change should have been announced months before and it seemed strange that users learned about it this way. More fear than harm in the end since Samsung has confirmed with SamMobile that was just a simple mistake. A patch has come to end the problem and everything should be back to normal.
What if Samsung followed in Apple’s footsteps?
Such a reversal, if it were to happen, would certainly affect the number of users of Samsung’s solution. It would be strange if the company suddenly decided to part with so many potential users without having an idea in mind.
Samsung had already abandoned the Magnetic Secure Transmission technology that allowed Samsung Pay to pay on devices incompatible with NFC. The attraction for Samsung’s solution had already declined a little at that time.
It is hard to see why Samsung would have any interest in embarking on such a venture if not to further strengthen its own ecosystem, but at what cost? These are just established thoughts on imaginary scenarios, but they are still worth keeping in mind.
