The Unicode consortium has just published the list of new emojis that will soon appear on our smartphones, tablets and computers.

Like every September for the past three years, the organization updates the list of these icons which occupy an important place in our text conversations. If last year we saw the appearance, among other things, of maracas, a donkey, or even two new hand signs, the 2023 edition could seem a little more anecdotal. And yet, the additions are more numerous than it seems.

Would you say yes to lime juice?

In total, 118 new emojis were selected by the consortium. The most notable newcomers are 6. They are a vertically shaking head and its horizontally shaking counterpart, a phoenix, a lime, a brown mushroom and of a broken chain. Among the less original additions, the consortium chose 4 new icons to represent different family sizes.

As Emojipedia notes, the other 108 additions come from a second choice of orientation for emojis that we already know. Characters who are walking, running, in a wheelchair, visually impaired, or praying can now be directed to the right. The consortium has of course added skin color variations for each of them, which explains the number of new versions.

The web giants, which are members of the organization, have not yet announced when they will integrate these new features into their platforms. However, for comparison, Google and Apple updated in January and February 2023, so we can expect similar deadlines for this new edition. A few more months, then, before we break our chains and rise from our ashes. And, perhaps, change the ranking of the most used emojis.
