More and more people rely on photovoltaics, solar expansion is picking up speed. Things have progressed particularly well in this German city over the last five years.

  • The Berlin-based solar company Enpal has examined how solar expansion in Germany has developed over the past five years.
  • With a rate of 15 installations per 100,000 inhabitants, the city of Paderborn is at the top.
  • Another city from East Westphalia follows closely behind.

In which federal states and in which large cities have the most photovoltaic systems per 100,000 inhabitants been put into operation in the past five years? Paderborn is at the top of this ranking with 15 installations. In absolute figures: 2,295 systems have been put into operation here since 2018. Gütersloh is hot on its heels with a quota of 14.7 solar installations (1,484 new installations). Oldenburg comes in third with a rate of 13.1 (2,228 installations with 170,390 inhabitants).

The big cities of Berlin and Hamburg bring up the rear in this analysis. Berlin has 3.67 million inhabitants – yet only 9,517 “systems of solar radiation energy” have been newly installed since 2018. This corresponds to a rate of 2.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. Hamburg comes last with 4,543 new installations in a population of 1.85 million (rate: 2.5).

The evaluation by Enpal is based on data from the market master data register in the period from January 1st, 2018 to March 4th, 2023. Operators can be natural persons as well as authorities and organizations.
