A Pinocchio in Fascist Italy

At first glance, this umpteenth adaptation of Pinocchio does not seem very original. This is misunderstanding Guillermo del Toro, who promises an astonishing version of the story of the wooden puppet wanting to become a little boy. The Mexican director thus shifts the plot of Carlo Collodi’s novel (1881) to the fascist Italy of the 1930s, and offers a stop-motion animated film – as in Coraline Where The strange Christmas of Mr. Jack — to the stunning artistic direction.

From Walt Disney’s cult version of 1940 (and even before!) to his scandalous live remake with Tom Hanks, released on Disney+ in September, the adaptations of Pinocchio are numerous. Co-directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, who notably worked on Fantastic Mr Foxthis new version promises to be dark and complex, addressing mourning, the question of identity and, of course, a society corrupted by fascism.

Last but not leastthis Pinocchio can count on the music of Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Shape of Water) and a five-star voice cast: Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, John Turturro… Note that in the French version, the film gives pride of place to a set of professional dubbing actors.

Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson will be released on December 9, 2022 on the Netflix streaming platform.
