Invited to speak about femininity in cinema and in her roles, actress Keira Knightley was not kind to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” saga, in which she felt objectified.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl celebrates its 20th birthday this year, but one actress in the film may not celebrate the anniversary with as much fervor as the audience.
During an interview with Harper’s Bazaaractress Keira Knightley, who shot in the first three installments of the Pirates of the Caribbean saga, spoke about the difficulties she had had with her character and the way he was presented on screen:
“[Elizabeth Swann] was everyone’s object of desire. Not that she didn’t have a struggle in her, but it was peculiar [pour moi] to go from a real tomboy to, on the screens, something really the opposite [de ce que je suis].
I felt really constrained, very locked up. So my next roles were trying to get away from that…I didn’t know how to articulate all of that. I felt trapped in something that I didn’t understand.”

She will reprise her role as Elizabeth Swann in Pirates of the Caribbean – Salazar’s Revenge, for a short appearance.
I had a strange start into adulthood, because I became famous at a very young age. Women are expected there to do nothing, publicly, and I had a lot of trouble with that. It was a real shock.
Remember that Keira Knightley started acting when she was only three years old and for her first film role in Deadly Sins (1995), she was only ten years old. She joined the Pirates saga after making a name for herself in 2002 in the comedy Joue-la comme Beckham.
The actress has just wrapped filming The Boston Strangler, which arrives on Disney+ on March 17. This thriller puts her in the shoes of journalist Loretta McLaughlin, who tries to unravel the mystery of the identity of the killer.
