Google presented this Thursday, October 6 its last two smartphones, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Proand hopes to compete with the iPhone 14 released just a few weeks ago.

After several months of rumors and leaks of all kinds, Google has finally formalized its Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. With these two smartphones, the American company seems determined to work twice as hard and convince the general public of the quality of its devices.

Google is not the only manufacturer to have unveiled new smartphones, however. Apple unsheathed the first of its iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, which are already in the hands of many users.

Do the Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro have the means to compete with Apple’s iPhone? We take stock by comparing the Google Pixel 7 to the iPhone 14 and the Google Pixel 7 Pro to the iPhone 14 Pro respectively. It’s game time!

Google Pixel 7 vs iPhone 14: two compact smartphones for the general public

A bigger, smoother display for the Pixel 7

The Google Pixel 7 has a 6.3-inch OLED screen, with a definition locked at 1080p and a refresh rate of 90 Hz. A fingerprint sensor is integrated into the panel to authenticate each time you use it.

The iPhone 14 takes another approach. Its screen is smaller (6.1 inches), but offers a better definition of 2,532 x 1,170 pixels. It also adopts OLED technology, although with a refresh rate of only 60 Hz. The notch is still relevant to integrate Face ID, Apple’s facial recognition system.

The Google Pixel also benefit from protection provided by Gorilla Glass Victus glass, while the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro benefit from the Ceramic Shield system, which is supposed to be more resistant to shocks and accidental drops. The two models finally share an IP68 certification which ensures them watertightness and resistance to dust.

A new processor signed Google, but which remains below Apple’s A15 Bionic

The Google Pixel 7 adopts the brand new Google Tensor 2. The chip, designed in-house by Google, offers rather high performance, even if the first benchmarks indicate that the SoC is not at the level of the latest mobile processors from Qualcomm. Google Tensor 2 should logically stand out more in machine learning and artificial intelligence operations, particularly in photo processing. The devices also accommodate 8 GB of RAM and are available in two versions with 128 and 256 GB of storage respectively.

On the connectivity side, the Google Pixel 7 ticks all the right boxes with the presence of Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6E, the latest standard in circulation, and a 5G modem.

The iPhone 14 recycles the Apple A15 Bionic from 2021. Apple chose the version that equipped the iPhone 13 Pro Max at the time, with six CPU cores, five GPU cores and a 16-core neural engine. Despite its first blown candle, the A15 Bionic remains one of the most powerful mobile chips still available on the market, and we refer you to our iPhone 13 Pro test to learn more about it.

The iPhone 14 does not do as well as the Google Pixel 7, with Wi-Fi 6 against Wi-Fi 6E on the Google device, but it still integrates Bluetooth 5.3 and 5G for faster speeds important in mobility.

There’s no photo, the Pixel 7 knocks out the iPhone 14 with its dual sensor

The Google Pixel 7 offers two cameras on the back. Its main sensor is 50 megapixels, with an aperture of ƒ/1.85, a pixel width of 1.2 μm and an 8x digital zoom with the “Super Res Zoom” feature which, according to the brand, allows you to maintain a satisfactory image quality thanks to its image processing algorithms.

There is also a 114° ultra-wide-angle 12-megapixel sensor, with an aperture of ƒ/2.2 and a pixel width of 1.25 μm. At the front this time is a 10.8 megapixel sensor, with a 92.8° field of view that allows you to take your selfies.

The iPhone 14, for its part, makes do with the same 12-megapixel dual-sensor module seen on the iPhone 13. However, Apple said it enlarged the size of its sensor to capture more light and achieve 50% results. more satisfying in night shots. The 12-megapixel front camera evolves with the presence of an autofocus.

On the video side, Google and Apple offer 4K capture, on all the sensors that make up their respective smartphones.

Faster charging for the Google Pixel 7

The Google Pixel 7 offers a 4,355 mAh battery and a USB-C 3.2 port for charging. The smartphone offers a 30 W fast charging system, with a dedicated adapter, and wireless charging on compatible chargers.

Apple does not give any indication of the capacity of its battery. It can be charged with a 20W adapter that allows it to recover 50% charge in 30 minutes. The iPhone 14 also features the MagSafe wireless charging system.

Google makes an effort with a much softer price than the iPhone

The Google Pixel 7 does not see its price increase compared to the previous generation and will be available from October 13 at a price of 649 euros for the 128 GB version.

The iPhone 14 sees its price jump in one year by more than 100 euros. It is already available at a price starting at 1,019 euros.

The iPhone 14 Pro offers a 6.1-inch screen, also OLED and LTPO with a maximum refresh at 120 Hz and minimum at 10 Hz for the all-new Always On mode. The resolution is 2556 x 1179 pixels. The notch has been reduced and replaced by the Dynamic Island which becomes an interactive area to display alerts and notifications. An iPhone 14 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch screen is also available for lovers of large screens.

Apple’s A16 Bionic crushes the competition… and the Google Pixel 7 Pro

Long story short, the Pixel 7 Pro packs the same Google Tensor 2 processor as the Google Pixel 7, but this time with 12GB of RAM versus 8GB for the mainstream model. The smartphone also offers a 512 GB capacity, in addition to 128 and 256 GB versions for taking and storing more photos.

The iPhone 14 Pro has a brand new A16 Bionic, 10% more efficient than the previous chip and qualified in our test as “ power monster “, exceeding the performance of other mobile processors tested during our tests. Apple goes overboard with four versions with 128, 256 and 512 GB, and 1 TB of storage.

For connectivity, Google still offers Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2, when the iPhone 14 Pro includes Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3. Both models are also 5G compatible.

Three sensors for every smartphone, but different philosophies

The Google Pixel 7 complements its 50-megapixel main sensor and 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor with a third 48-megapixel telephoto sensor with 30x “Super Res Zoom” and 5x optical zoom. The 10.8 megapixel front sensor remains the same between the two devices. Finally, Google relies on its image processing systems to improve the quality of the images produced.

The iPhone 14 Pro also has three sensors, with a 48-megapixel wide-angle sensor that offers 12-megapixel shots using pixel-bimming technology. The 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle offers a 120° field of view, 5x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom, identical to the Google Pixel 7 Pro. The 12-megapixel front sensor is the same as that of the iPhone 14.

Fast charging: advantage to Pixel 7 Pro

The Google Pixel 7 Pro offers a 5,000 mAh battery, 30 W fast charging and wireless charging.

Apple, true to its habits, does not communicate on the capacity of its battery, but offers a 20 W charge with 50% battery in 30 minutes, wireless charging and compatibility with MagSafe accessories.

The Google Pixel 7 Pro at an unchanged price when Apple explodes the prices

Google has been trying hard to woo consumers and hasn’t raised the price of its Pixel 7 Pro, despite inflation. It is offered from 899 euros for its 128 GB version.

Apple was not so accommodating and drastically increased the prices of its Pro versions. The iPhone 14 Pro is available from 1,329 euros, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max is trading at a price of 1,479 euros.
