What’s new for Pixel smartphones

Over the next few weeks, Pixel smartphones will get several new features – some of which are limited to specific devices.

As with all Pixel smartphones, you can expect to get the new cinematic wallpapers from Google that transform standard 2D images into 3D images. The idea? Have a more immersive wallpaper. Speaking of wallpapers, Google announced new Emoji wallpapers during the Google I/O keynote, and they’re officially launching with this update.

Google Assistant is getting a new security feature that lets you schedule a security check within 15 minutes or 8 hours. The check will alert your emergency contacts of the duration and reason for the check, if you provided one. At the end of the scheduled period, the Google Assistant will ask you if you are safe. You can then indicate that you are safe, start sharing your location with your pre-selected contacts, or ask Google Assistant to call for help.

Google has also made improvements to the Pixel’s car crash detection feature not only alerting first responders in the event of a detected accident, but also now sending your location to your emergency contacts.

The Pixel Recorder app will soon allow you totag speakers, then search the recording for a specific speaker or export the transcript to Google Docsas well as create video clips of a speaker-tagged recording.

The Camera application has a new Macro Focus video function that allows close-up videos, and not just pictures. If you have a recent Pixel smartphone, you’ll also have the option of raising your palm while framing a photo and triggering a countdown before taking the photo.

What’s new on the Pixel Watch?

The Pixel Watch gains a few cool features with the latest update.

The watch automatically pauses a run, walk or bike ride when it detects that you have stopped, whether at a red light or when you need a break. It then resumes automatically when you start moving again.

Additionally, the Pixel Watch will begin to track your blood oxygen levels (Sp02) while you sleepand you’ll start receiving high and low heart rate notifications from the watch, letting you know if your heart rate is above or below your usual heart rate range.

As is usually the case with Google updates, not all of these features will be available immediately. They are starting to roll out now and may take a few weeks to arrive on your Pixel smartphone or Watch.
